Riverside College, Inc. is a Private Academic Institution in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. The College is operated and managed by Metro Pacific Hospital Holdings, Inc.
It’s a new semester, students! This 2022, more colleges, universities, and specialized schools are conducting limited face-to-face classes now that the restrictions have been eased to Alert Level 1 in most cities in Metro Manila and other key cities in the provinces.
With more schools holding face-to-face classes, there’s now an opportunity for you to reunite with or finally meet your classmates, professors, org mates, pati na rin ang mga ate at kuya from students’ favorite food spots and coffee places.
While students are both excited and anxious over the new semester and the possibility of face-to-face classes, do take note that schools in different regions have varying guidelines depending on the Alert Level of their area.
Yours can be one of the schools resuming on-campus classes. Whether you’re excited to see your classmates in the flesh or anxious about the beginning of classes, here are some tips to help you face the semester. Are you ready to go back to school (physically)?
Follow the school’s protocols
Schools, as public spaces, follow IATF COVID-19 guidelines. Apart from enforcing social distancing, temperature checks, and keeping your face mask on at all times, they also have their initiatives such as handwashing stations, ensuring proper ventilation, and setting up physical barriers, markers and signages, thermal scanners, and air purifiers. All these para mapanatiling ligtas ang mga estudyante at staff!
And when you’re not feeling well, it’s best to stay at home instead. Once you’re well, make sure to frequently check your school’s social media pages for the latest updates and protocols for face-to-face classes.
Hygiene kits are a must
Apart from following the school’s guidelines, we also have to do our part in keeping the campus COVID-free. For one, dapat may nakahanda kang hygiene kit. Your kit should contain alcohol, wipes, soap, and an extra face mask. Having these will help mitigate the spread of the virus on-campus and at home.
Bringing a sanitizing kit alone is not the way to go– using the items is! Siguraduhing palaging nag-di-disinfect ng iyong uupuan, your lunch table, the items you frequently use, and even your classmate’s or friends hands (if they ask, of course). Wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible.
As soon as you get home, disinfect your phone, ID, bag, eyeglasses (if you have one), money, shoes, and clothes. Have your home wear ready and shower immediately after arriving home. Sa ganitong paraan, your family will be safe from possible exposure to the virus.
Hand waving will do
It’s been a while since you saw your friends, and hugging them is definitely tempting. But, for everyone’s safety, waving at each other will have to do in the meantime. Not only does it minimize possible contact with the virus, but hand waving also encourages everyone to still be friendly while remaining socially-distanced
Alternatives to hand waving can be bowing or air hugs, too!
Bring your own… everything
Another way to minimize the potential spread of the virus is to bring your own, well, everything: water bottle, utensils, calculators, pens, toiletries, and paper.
We’re sure that schools and establishments have been regularly disinfecting the facilities, so let’s do our part by disinfecting them too after use for the next person. This includes the utensils and cups you’re going to use whenever you eat at the cafeteria or outside.
It’s no secret that part of school life is asking for a sheet of paper whenever the professor suddenly requires one. But, for now, it’s best to buy your own. Tigil muna saglit sa paghingi ng yellowpad paper sa katabi.
It’s okay to still do online
If you’re worried about the commute, the crowds, and other circumstances that can affect your face-to-face class experience, it’s okay to still do online classes. To add, some schools offer a hybrid classroom setup where professors teach both in-person and remote students. Maaaring mag-accommodate ng in-person students ang classes depending on the school location’s alert level status and at the same time, other students can continue doing distance learning. On your end, make sure to be engaged in your classes, nasa classroom ka man o nasa bahay.
Check out the latest list of schools that allow limited face-to-face classes in the Philippines. You can also ask your schools whether they support a hybrid learning setup. This way, you have the option of going to school or continuing your learning at home.
Whether you’re attending on-campus classes or distance learning, there are ways your university administrator can help out, especially with distance learning. What matters is you get the best out of the incoming year, whether it be at home or on your campus.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have wreaked havoc on our daily lives. We are now living in the “new normal,” as they call it, and as we shift to it, changes and adjustments occurred rapidly and abruptly. Life changes are frequently accompanied by a wide range of experiences and emotions. The transition to the new normal can be smooth at times, but it can also be choppy or downright bumpy at other times! Some people may find themselves in survival mode, gathering information and resources needed to function at school, at work, as individuals, and in interpersonal relationships. Others might be trying to get used to their new routines. COVID-19 has resulted in schools shutting down all across the world. Of course, learning should not stop; that is why learning adjustments are made. With this sudden shift away from the classroom in many parts of the globe, including the Philippines, schools and other institutions now opt for their teachers and students to continue learning in virtual classrooms using digital platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Many schools are now offering online courses in response to high demand.
Teachers adapting to the new normal is very challenging, but here in Riverside College, teachers turned these challenges into opportunities. Mr. Mark Ortibano, RPm, MSPsy, RPsy, CDR, a Negrense Psychologist, conducted a webinar to the students of Riverside College, Inc. about his learning adjustments hacks and tips.
These are as follows:
His first hack is to Study by Chunks; this entails breaking down a difficult chapter or topic into more manageable pieces and having students rewrite these “chunks” in their own words. This way, their attention will be drawn to a specific topic, allowing them to gain a better understanding. Students are more likely to remember and process information when they understand what they are trying to learn.
Am I the only one who gets distracted when studying if I hear a single tone notification on my phone? This is probably the most challenging part of learning when your mind is occupied and distracted by other things, such as engaging and scrolling through your social media accounts. In his second hack, Mr. Mark shared that to minimize destruction, one must turn off notifications and remember that it is school and not Facebook. This is an excellent method for anyone who is having trouble studying.
Some of the students who take online classes are easily bored, and they end up missing their class discussions. In his third hack, he suggested that students should participate and engage in their online discussions by being more active, awake, and focused to fully understand their discussions.
In this new normal setting, having a space in your home, study areas, or work areas is a significant factor for learning. It is suggested that one should make a space for oneself. It will allow them to concentrate better on their tasks and discussions, and it will also enable them to think more clearly. A clear mind equals better comprehension, and better comprehension leads to accurate and excellent results.
Everyone has their own learning style. Some people may benefit from studying while listening to music, while others may not. As a result, it is critical to recognize one’s own learning style. After all, this will have a significant impact on their learning.
With all of the extra time that we most likely have during this pandemic, most of us feel compelled to do and accomplish many things. Sometimes these tasks that we ought to achieve at our specific time and date are not always realistic. Manage your expectations carefully and learn to categorize them in a realistic manner.
In so many ways, planning is essential, and it will always be the first step in any situation or circumstance. To achieve one’s goals, one must plan ahead. Mr. Orbano stated that you should feel free to communicate with your professors because you will be guided in this way.
This famous question always pops up anywhere, at any time. “Anong plano mo?” What’s your plan? The majority of students will definitely say that it is for their own good, for their family, and for everyone who supports and prays for them. So as for you who are lost, “Balikan an hugot,” go back to your primary purpose. Ground yourself in what truly motivates you to study and pursue your career, and maybe then you will discover and realize something that will keep you going.
Everything can be done in a certain amount of time; even God created the entire universe in six days and rested on the seventh day to look at His creation and see that it was very good. You, too, are entitled to take a break, take it easy, relax and rest. By doing this, you will most likely have the energy and motivation to function and focus again on finishing your next tasks.
We all have our own limitations, and it is right and just to acknowledge them. However, don’t let it dominate your thoughts and capabilities; because you are more than capable of accomplishing the majority of your goals.
For many years and months, these Learning Adjustments in Online Classes have increased respect for teachers and diligent students. No one can truly stop someone from learning if they are determined and dedicated enough.
In its pursuit of continually seeking strategies to help students gain a complete understanding of new concepts introduced to them, Mr. Ariel Joy Patria Jr. (Senior High School Principal) and Ms. Marie Bernadette “Marbie” Villanueva (Psychology Department Program Head) were tasked to explore different Learning Models such as reading comprehension and instruction programs suited to the specific needs of Riverside Collegians. After a thorough investigation of existing models and programs, and with some modifications and trials made, Riverside College, Inc. has finally come up with its own 4Es Learning Model effective this 2nd Semester. This consists of a set order of events that would facilitate learning and these are Engage, Explore, Extend and Evaluate.
When students are given the opportunity to create something on their own, they often thrive. According to research, the more active a person’s brain is in various areas, the greater chance for retention. As a result, the first of the four Learning Models is known as Engage.
Engage is primarily concerned with building on existing knowledge and prior experiences. It includes a review of previous concepts, lessons, and skills that have been acquired. By assisting our students in engaging their prior knowledge and connecting new information to their previous understanding, we increase the likelihood that they will be able to recall and apply what we teach.
Explore is concerned with the in-depth examination of the most significant aspects of a concept in order to gain a better understanding of what is already known. New learning is constructed on prior knowledge. The greater our understanding of what students already think, and the more we help and assist them, the more likely they are to learn well.
Extend entails drawing conclusions and making broad generalizations, as well as making connections between lessons and relevant contexts. When introducing a new lesson, it’s important to emphasize the broader concepts as a whole to ensure comprehension, rather than individual facts, as these can distract from the overall message. Assessment is an integral part of instruction because it determines whether or not the educational objectives are being met. Students today need to know not only the basic reading and arithmetic skills but also the skills that will prepare them to deal with the challenges of a constantly changing world. They must be able to think critically, analyze, and make inferences. Changes in the skills base and knowledge that our students need require new learning goals; these new learning goals change the relationship between assessment and instruction.
The last of the four Learning Models is knowns as Evaluate, it is concerned with the assessments of learning and connects it for application to solve real-world problems and situations.
When it comes to implementing their Learning Activities, the 4Es will only serve as a guide for the teachers to follow. The significance and effectiveness of a Learning Model is actually dependent on the teachers’ ability to motivate and engage their student to participate in active and interactive learning. It is very important that the learning environment created around this 4Es Learning Model is capable of providing the best possible learning experience for the students. Students’ success are most likely to take place when their needs are identified, understood, and supported.

The year 2020 was a period of seemingly organized sequential events that significantly impacted our mental health. It brought tears, despair, and chaos to the lives of many Filipinos. It was like a monthly episode of disaster: a volcanic explosion in January, an animal virus outbreak in February, and a pandemic in March. These are just a few of the numerous reasons to bid farewell to the year 2020 and all the sorrow and suffering it has wrought. It has caused a great deal of darkness and depression, as well as hopelessness and oppression. But we also have enough reason to be grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunities that the year 2020 has brought. The beginning of a new year has come. As we embark on this new decade, there may be uncertainties but there will also be new trends to adjust to, new habits to manage, new lifestyles to embrace, and new possibilities to take advantage of as the decade unfolds. There may be a lot of changes in systems and processes, in businesses, in schools, in the workplace or even among social circles.
We can’t foretell what the year 2021 will bring for each of us, but we can always approach it with the appropriate attitude and enough positivity to get us through it. If we begin to manage our expectations and define clearly our goals and objectives, then the year 2021 will not be difficult to handle. Instead of making resolutions, why don’t we set objectives that we can focus on and work on. Tiny steps taken are far better than not taking a step at all. Dr. Michelle M. Saplada, Vice-President for Academic Affairs of Riverside College, presented a strategy to be implemented in meeting targets for 2021. PLOW is the keyword here. The letter “P” stands for “Plan,” as we need to formulate, implement, evaluate and re-evaluate well our plans. Every circumstance benefits greatly from careful planning, which clarifies what we should be doing and where we should focus our attention initially. “L” stands for “Lessen,” which refers to the fact that we need to reduce the amount of time we spend troubleshooting. The letter “O” stands for “Open, “as we strive to practice open communication with each other in order to prevent misunderstandings. “W” stands for “Welcome” because we must welcome positive feedback to improve our operations. As we learnt about the PLOW strategy, let us take a moment to think on it. It is quite simple, yet it has the potential to save us a significant amount of time and energy while also improving our mental health.
